PRESS RELEASE

A new initiative to amplify women's voices in the media is launching today.

Women in Media Belfast (#WIMB) has been created by three of Irish media's best known journalists and commentators - Amanda Ferguson, Allison Morris and Patricia MacBride.

Their inaugural conference takes place online on Monday, March 8th, marking International Women's Day 2021.

Security Correspondent Allison Morris, Northern Correspondent Amanda Ferguson, and lawyer Patricia MacBride, all broadcasters and regular media commentators, had been due to launch their new venture last year but the global coronavirus pandemic disrupted plans.

Their Women's Day event is open to all, and will appeal to media workers, PR and public affairs professionals, the community and voluntary sector, politicos, women experts in their field and others.

Patricia, Allison and Amanda identified the need to amplify the voices of women working in print, broadcast, online and entertainment media, and to showcase the knowledge and expertise of women in all sections of our society.

Their mission is to empower women to raise their voices and ensure that they are heard.

They want to challenge inequality, and the silencing and side-lining of women in the media and society.

Allison Morris said: "We have been inspired throughout our careers by powerful women from all walks of life who have made a huge difference, but often those voices work quietly in the background, rarely receiving the recognition they deserve.

"The aim of Women in Media Belfast is to amplify those voices and help inspire the next generation."

Patricia MacBride said: "Through our conferences and events, we want to create a media environment where competent and confident women’s voices are regularly heard across all outlets.

"Our goal is to amplify the quiet voices."

Amanda Ferguson said: "If the last year or so has taught us anything it's about seizing the day, so here we are.

"We look forward to a diverse range of delegates joining us in the Zoom room on International Women's Day, for a lively and inspiring conference exploring all the key issues of the day."

The full line up will be announced shortly.
